About Tortuguero
Tortuguero is located in the north
Caribbean of Costa Rica, in the province of Limon. You
can get to Tortuguero by boat from Limon, or through
the towns of Siqurres (Caño Blanco) or Cariari
(La Pavona).
With respect to the climate, the temperature varies
between 28-32 Celsius and an annual precipitation of
5000mm. April and September have been found to be the
driest months of the year.
Most the forest found in Tortuguero is dominated by
palms such as the Raphia palm (Raphia taedigera) and
the Royal palm (Manicaria saccifera). Also, the dominant
trees found in the area are the Five o’clock tree
(Pentaclethra macroloba) and Cativo (Prioria copaifera).
Here in Tortuguero you will have the chance to observe
many species of birds, toucans, herons and kingfishers
common to the area.
One of the main attractions for most guests to Tortuguero
is the sea turtles that arrive annually to nest on the
beaches. Between the months of March and July it is
possible to find the Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys
coriacea) and from July until November the Green turtle
(Chelonia mydas). This is what makes Tortuguero one
of the most important nesting grounds for the sea turtles
in all the Caribbean.
Before the seventies the area of Tortuguero ended up
over-exploiting the meat and eggs of the green turtles.
With the hopes of protecting this special species the
Tortuguero National Park was created with 26400 hectares
of forest and if found 8km south of Vista Al Mar Lodge.
